There are a few things that may give you problems when you install Vicomsoft products.   Two of the issues are unique to the MacOS, one is common to Windows and MacOS.

Watch the IP addresses

The SurfDoubler and SoftRouterPlus setup wizards set the LAN NIC address to 192.168.1.254 by default during the MacOS installation. (The Windows installer first checks your LAN NIC and leaves it alone if you have a static address set.)

This address works as well as setting the NIC to 192.168.0.1, but you need to make sure the sharing Clients on your LAN are set to match this different address.

This means that you set your other computers to 192.168.1.XXX, instead of the 192.168.0.XXX series of addresses.

If you enable and use the DHCP server built into SurfDoubler or SoftRouterPlus, and set your Client machines to obtain an address automatically (or from a DHCP server), then the proper addresses will be set automatically on the Client computers.

Do the Ethernet card shuffle!

If you are running MacOs 8.5 on a computer with two Network Interface Cards, one of which is connected to a cable modem, you should read this information from Vicomsoft.

I've confirmed that Vicom's Softrouter Plus and SurfDoubler have problems obtaining an IP address from a DHCP server if you are using your Mac's built-in Ethernet to connect to the cable modem.

Save yourself some time and make sure that you use your built-in Ethernet card for your LAN/Appletalk connection, and use the second Ethernet card that you add, for your cable modem connection
If your ISP locks your service to the card (as MediaOne does in the Northeast and other areas), be sure to call your ISP and register the address for the new Ethernet card,

Watch your version

If you have any problems trying to get any of the Vicomsoft products listed below running with MacOS8.5 or 8.5.1, be sure to download the updater from their Web site:

  • Vicomsoft Internet Gateway 4.5.2

  • Vicomsoft SurfDoubler 4.1.2

The latest versions of all products don't need this updater.  However, if you are in doubt, download it and run it.  It will tell you whether or not you have a product needing update.
